if someone says something that doesnt make literal sense
and they dont offer an explanation
it might be a metaphor
you just haVe to figure out what they meant by it
youll get the hang of it pretty quickly

theres similes too
theyre a lot like metaphors
basically
a simile is where someone outright compares two things
like if they say 'you need a doomsday deVice like a fish needs a two-wheeled deVice'
thats a simile
a fish obViously doesnt need a two-wheeled deVice cause fish dont eVen haVe legs
the whole idea is ridiculous
so the message is that person really does not need a doomsday deVice

a metaphors where theres no outright comparison
youre not saying one thing is like something else
youre saying it actually IS something else
only its not actually literal
like if someone said 'this session is drowning in a sea of ineptitude'
there is no actual sea
and no one is actually drowning
it just means theres a fuckload of ineptitude
